Clan Gunn Society |
Welcome to the Clan Gunn and the Clan Gunn Society website. The Clan Gunn is one of the oldest Scottish clans descended from the Norse Jarls of Orkney and the Pictish Mormaers of Caithness. The Clan was originally based on the east coast of Caithness, but from the fifteenth century the senior line settled in the Strath of Kildonan in north east Sutherland; the Robson Gunns had their seat in Braemore in south east Caithness and the third main family established themselves in Cattaig and Dalemore on the upper reaches of the River Thurso. Today there are members of the Clan and Clan Gunn Societies in the UK, North America, Nova Scotia, New Zealand and Australia bound by strong links of friendship and kinship. We are proud of our Clan Heritage Centre at Latheron in Caithness based in the old Parish Church of Latheron which has provided a focal point for the Clan since it opened in 1985. Our clan archive is one of the most comprehensive, thanks to the work of Dr. Colin Gunn and our current clan genealogist Abb Gunn of Alpharetta, Georgia, USA. 2010 is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Clan Gunn Society. We marked the occasion with a dinner at the Scottish Parliament Building hosted by Jamie Stone, MSP for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross on St Donan’s Day, Saturday 17 April 2010.
This year’s Mini Gathering will be held in Caithness from Friday, 30 July to Sunday 1 August and will include an Open day at the Clan Gunn Heritage Centre at Latheron on 30 July at which members of the Clan will be invited to bring their family trees and family photographs to up-date the Clan Archive. We shall also have on display the results of the art competition being run by the Society in local primary schools to celebrate our Golden Jubilee.
There will be a ceilidh in Clyth Hall in the evening of 30 July and the Clan will have a tent at the Halkirk Highland games on Saturday 3l July to which all members of the Clan will be welcome.
The Clan Dinner will be held on Saturday evening and the programme will end with a service at Kildonan Church on Sunday, 1 August at 3.00 p.m..
I hope that as many members of the Clan as possible will be able to join us during out Golden Jubilee celebrations.
With all good wishes for 2010. Iain Gunn of Banniskirk |
